In 1974, as an antidote to
the growing restrictions of competition flying, Philip Wills created
Competition Enterprise and gave John Fielden
the task of nurturing and bringing it to the soaring public. John’s
innovative task setting (including the origin of current day BGA POST
tasks) of maximising the day, weather, pilot skill and perspicacity are
the ‘norm’ for Enterprise. Handicaps are based on the current B.G.A. speed
indices.
Previous Enterprises at
North Hill have seen pilots soaring along the cliffs and on one particular
occasion out to sea as well as the more usual ridge, thermal, convergence,
wave and sea breeze opportunities. It is hoped
that there will be the chance for many hours of enterprising soaring. We
have picked the same week as previous ‘ 8 days
out of 8’ Enterprise weeks and given reasonable luck, we feel confident of
putting on an interesting and enjoyable week of Enterprising flying.
An integral part of
Enterprise has become Justin Will’s daily de-brief of the previous day’s
flying, allowing everyone to participate. This provides an excellent
chance to share, learn and reflect on our skills.
